About the author/illustrator - Tina Field Howe

I spent my childhood in Waverly, NY, a quiet little village close to the northern border of Pennsylvania. After being away for many years, I recently moved back. But not just "back." I was fortunate to be able to live, once again, in the house my great-grandfather built in 1904!

There is lots of countryside here, and I spent a lot of time in the fields and woods near my house, examining creatures, climbing trees, racing along well-worn paths, and sometimes "helping" my mom, dad and grandmother with the gardening. Nature has always been a part of my life, so it is no surprise that this story takes place at the entrance to a garden.

As a child I had many favorite books and loved being read to. I remember the day I "got" reading, with my mother's loving assistance. I've been an avid reader ever since and have been writing poetry and stories of all types since my twenties. I enjoyed reading to my son until he became a reader. It was during that time that I became inspired to write children's stories. Many writers have inspired me, too many to list (but my all-time favorite children's author's last name rhymes with "moose!"

I found that there's one thing that all great children's book creators have in common: what they write or what they draw comes from their own truth. There are no formulas and you can not fool children! Though I've been creative in various media all my life, I became serious about illustration in the 1990s. Having published in several books and other media, Snailsworth, a slow little story, is my first children's writing and illustration endeavor. I think that creating children's books may be my destiny!

I hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology and a minor in Art from State University of New York at Brockport. I've been involved in graphic design, very heavily in digital media, since 1990. Click here to view my illustration web site.

Since creating Snailsworth, I've written the first two books in tween and up sci-fi/fantasy Tellings of Xunar-kun Series, and produced the award-winning, full-cast audio book version of Alysa of the Fields. Visit Alysa Books for more information. I have been heavily focusing on writing screenplays over the last couple of years as well.

I do many talks to schools and conduct creativity coaching for children and adults, groups and individuals.
